We offer three levels of service of “hands-on” editing services where specific changes and corrections are made into the manuscript or document. These services generally come last in the development process, when the manuscript is ready for submission, publication, review consideration, or typesetting.

Overview

Proofreading is our most affordable and basic of these services, providing correction only. There are no changes made or suggestions relating to the wording itself, just edits to fix grammar, spelling, and typographical errors. It's a vital last step for preparing for publication and often advisable before submission to agents and publishers. It won't elevate poor writing, but it will make it correct.

Copyediting includes proofreading as above as well as attention to matters of clarity, usage, flow, word choice, and in some cases conformity to a given style manual such as the Chicago Manual of Style, when required by a publisher.

Line editing may be heavy, light, or somewhere in between and is done with the intention of bringing out the best in an author's narrative voice, dialogue, and prose style. It can make poor writing read better and good writing really shine. It represents the highest level of the editor's craft and is often educational thanks to explanations of principles in supporting footnotes.

What To Expect

All line-by-line editing services are done electronically using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature which allows authors to accept, modify, or reject all our editors’ changes. We provide both clean as-edited copy and also a compared version that shows exactly what was changed.

Our proofreading and copyediting services are provided with the intention of meeting or exceeding a reasonable standard of correctness, consistency, and attention to style as is customary in the publishing industry.

Please note that due to the scope of the changes and the author’s participation in implementing the changes, a light proofread may be advisable after the line-editing stage.

Pricing

Proofreading: Editing for typographical and mechanical errors, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Standard rate of $.008 per word for longer works. (Resulting in a fee of about $2.00 per double spaced page with default margins and a 12-point font.) Request a quote

Copyediting: Proofreading (please see above) as well as editing for clarity, consistency, and conformity to style. Standard rate of $.016 per word. (Resulting in a fee of about $4.00 per double spaced page with default margins and a 12-point font.) Request a quote

Line Editing: Hands-on editing and polishing of a writer's style with attention to quality and flow of narrative voice, dialogue, proportion, mechanics, and overall readability. The price varies considerably, based on the scope and depth of the editing required, but typical line editing fees fall between $6 and $15 a page. Request a quote

Author Testimonials

I've been writing for ten years to marginal avail. But with assistance from TED my skills have accelerated. I could not have taken my novel to where it is now headed without you. Feedback is direct but encouraging, at times painful, worth every penny.
