Bio

nicci jordan hubert

Nicci Jordan Hubert has been in publishing in its various forms--newspaper, magazine, book, etc.--since 1999, but it is in the slow and loving process of storytelling she's happiest. Currently a freelance editor in New York, Nicci has worked for several publishing houses, including Random House NY.

Specializing in fiction, Nicci prefers to work in genres like contemporary women's, literary, as well as the occasional thriller or mystery. She also works frequently with religious fiction, particularly that geared toward the CBA. Her editorial process relies heavily on dialogue and brainstorming, in an effort to support the author during the sometimes painstaking work of revisions.

Her favorite writers include Kathryn Stockett, Jodi Picoult, Michael Chabon, Barbara Kingsolver, Yann Martel, Stephen King, Audrey Niffinegger, John Irving, J.D. Salinger, Douglas Coupland, and of course, the great Jane Austen.

In her own words:

It sounds generic, but whenever anyone asks me, "What's your favorite genre?" I always answer, "good books." Any book, if it's great, transcends genre. Consider Stephen King--the master of characterization, among other things--and Suzanne Collins of the ostensibly YA Hunger Games trilogy, and even Amy Chua, controversial-memoir phenom. Regardless of its category, if a book is excellent, it will connect with its readers. Thus, what I'm looking for is a book that shows an author's discipline, honed skill, and commitment to his/her characters and story arc. But if I had to choose favorite genres, I would say: literary fiction, contemporary women's fiction, YA fiction, narrative non-fiction, and memoir/autobiography.

Preferred Genres

Absolute favorite fiction genre: contemporary women's fiction

Preferred fiction genres: mainstream fiction, literary fiction, political thrillers, women's fiction, young adult fiction

Other fiction genres Nicci enjoys working on: biographical fiction, middle grade, children's, humor, satire, horror, psychological thrillers

Genres Nicci prefers not to work on: science-fiction, fantasy, military thrillers, western/frontier, travel, historical, self-help

Absolute favorite nonfiction categories: memoir, autobiography

Other areas of interest in nonfiction: narrative nonfiction, creative nonfiction, cooking, food/wine, crime and criminals, entertainment, gay and lesbian, health, mind and body, parenting and families, philosophy, politics, religion and spirituality, women's studies

Testimonials

"Working with Nicci has been fantastic. She has provided knowledge, feedback, and encouragement. As a new writer I was not sure what to expect coming to TED and have been pleased overall with everything. I know there are loads of other writers that probably have more experience, more talent, more...well everything, but I never felt like the little guppie in the ocean of excellence. The TED staff was great from the beginning and Nicci has been nothing short of fantastic to work with. I look forward to continuing to work with her and the rest of the Editorial Department team!"

TED Client Testimonials

"It's nice to have a seasoned pair of eyes on my work. As a first-time novelist, adhering to the wrong counsel could instill bad habits for me. But Peter Gelfan has seen a lot and has guided authors through to publication, so his opinion carries a lot of weight with me."
