We take the process of manuscript assignment seriously at TED.  We have a small but diverse staff of editors with a wide range of tastes, specialties, and areas of expertise. While there's no surefire way to know we have a good author/editor match until we get into the process, there are several considerations that come into play in the assignment process, including:

  • genre or category*
  • setting
  • writing style
  • whether the work is intended to be more literary or commercial
  • whether the author's goal is to publish traditionally or self-publish
  • personality and working style of author and editor
  • author's time line and editor availability
  • nature of editorial work needed

The more information we have up front, the better the match we can make between editor and author, so feel free to tell us whatever you feel we need to know to best serve you. If you’d like to fill out a short questionnaire to help us get to know you and your project better before we assign your manuscript, please click here.

All assigning is done by Jane Ryder and Ross Browne with careful attention to the above considerations. Requests for specific editors on our staff are generally honored when the editor is available.

Questions about the assigning process? Please contact Ross Browne at the Tucson Office.

*It's extremely helpful to have an accurate statement of genre when assigning work, so please refer to our fiction and nonfiction genre category guides if you have any questions about what category your book falls into.

TED Client Testimonials

"John Marlow and I have worked on a development outline of my ms for three months. To have 20 hours, one-on-one with John on the phone has been absolutely invaluable to me; the best investment I’ve ever made. I trust him completely and feel that he has my best interests at heart. I can’t say enough of how much I’ve learned from him. I’m having so much fun. Now I just have to make sure I’ll write a great story worthy of that great outline. Thanks John. Thanks TED. I’ll be back for more."
