In the month prior to the nonfiction charts "going rogue" with Sarah Palin, the nerds have taken over the bookstores. Well, generally male nerds, as ESPN blogger (although that doesn't seem to get close to the level of his popularity) Bill Simmons debuts at number one with his massive book on professional basketball. While 700 pages of pop culture references and crazed opinions, The Book of Basketball is probably needing a tougher editor, but it's certainly an amazing accomplishment for bloggers and obsessive sports fans. Further down the chart, Chuck Klosterman's new collection of essays might have been buoyed by Simmons' book (Klosterman has appeared on Simmons' podcast several times), but it's definitely a book championing nerdish insights on life (one essay compares Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo, Ralph Nader and German director Werner Herzog, of all things). For someone like me who would rather discuss Beverly Hills 90210 (a theme common to both Simmons and Klosterman) than the faults of the Obama administration, it's been a great month in bookstores. |
TED Client Testimonials
"I saw it listed in "Self-Editing for Fiction Writers" and noticed it was based in Tucson. Since I live in Phoenix, I called and made an appointment to check TED out. Ross and Jane were absolutely delightful. Ross had Shannon Roberts, TED's fantasy expert, evaluate my manuscript. It was, at the same time, the most enlightening and most excruciating experience I've ever had. Ms. Roberts was kind enough to let me vent and even helped me work through the many changes she suggested. Though difficult at first, I've managed to implement most of the changes and the manuscript is indescribably better as a result. The value of TED's services has been inestimable. I will be forever indebted to them." John Robbins Mesa, Arizona |
