Things We Actually Like: LitChatPosted by: Dan Gibson on Jan 29, 2010 |

The Internet is a mess. This might be my own personal bias resulting from the laptop melting virus that ruined the first half of my month, but I think most people would agree the signal to noise ratio online is rather low. In a way, every horrible blog with pop-up ads flying everywhere makes up appreciate those places where the Internet is really helpful and kind of awesome. Today, one of the really cool aspects of the Internet celebrates its first anniversary, LitChat.A year ago, Twitter wasn't quite the insane juggernaut it is now, but inspired by a chat held for journalists, author Carolyn Burns Bass ended up creating a community of authors, agents, publishers and fans of writing numbering over 5,000 attendees meeting three times a week online. Each week there's a theme, and Bass pulls in authors to discuss their work and interest with anyone who has a Twitter account and something interesting to say. Our own Renni Browne stepped into the arena and had a blast discussing her career and perspectives on writing and editing, had a blast, and we were sold. We all love books, and while we may not have friends surrounding us who want to spend an hour discussing what we're reading and what we're excited about, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 4 p.m. Eastern, the LitChat crowd is there on Twitter. It's comforting to find people who share your passion and the for book lovers, LitChat community can feel like home.
