Agent Matchmaking Program: Success!

Posted by Karinya Funsett in Nonfiction , Market , AMP , Agents

I'll admit that I was skeptical about the marketability of "another cancer memoir" when Valerie Reiss' book proposal first crossed my desk. There are so may of them out there these days, and memoirs by the non-famous are such a tough sell, and, and, and... then I read it. It's true that it was a cancer memoir. But it was a cancer memoir with a clever and charming voice, intelligent, well-written content, and a very unique angle. In fact, the proposal was so good that we didn't even need to edit it!

Valerie had queried agents on her own in the past, but hadn't made much headway. We offered to go to bat for her and her fantastic project via our agent matchmaking program, and in late January we sent out the first round of submissions.

Summer Slowdown

Posted by Karinya Funsett in Market

If this is your first year in the serious writing or publishing game, you may be wondering why, all of a sudden, it seems like things in publishing have gone from just a regular crawl to an excruciatingly slow crawl. On behalf of the more seasoned writers & publishing folks, I'd like to welcome you to your first "summer slowdown."

Spelling it out in the Synopsis

Posted by Karinya Funsett in Untagged

shiftkeyLet’s start by getting this out in the open: I’m not what one would call an especially fantasy-savvy reader.I like good stories regardless of the genre, but when my co-workers start throwing around fantasy references during our chats, I more often than not have to quickly google the author or character in question before saying, “ah, yes, I get it now! Good one!” Ahem.

Good week in the agent matchmaking program.

Posted by Karinya Funsett in AMP , Agents

Anyone who has worked with me knows that I'm a big fan of young and/or new-ish agents. (So much, in fact, that I wrote an article about it here!) But when I'm making submissions for projects in the agent matchmaking program, do I limit my hunt to just the young'uns?

Over one wall, and on to the next!

Posted by Karinya Funsett in AMP , Agents

I got some exciting news today regarding one of the projects currently in our agent matchmaking program. We had received a request for the full manuscript from an agent we're all excited about. She had requested the manuscript back in April, and when I hadn't heard from her by last week (about 8 weeks, a standard review time for a full manuscript) I decided to check in with her.

I'm not trying to scare you...

Instead, I'll let Curtis Brown agent Nathan Bransford do it for me: http://nathanbransford.blogspot.com/2009/06/stepping-up-your-game.html

I'm pointing everyone I can to this blog post because a)he's hilarious, and b)everything he says here is completely true. I try to balance out my "omg but it's sooooo hard" posts (this one) with the occasional "glimmer of hope" posts (yesterday's rundown of some recent debut deals) and I think Nathan's post is a good middle-ground.

More hope!

A few weeks ago I posted some of the more interesting debut sales that had been recently made. There have actually been A LOT of exciting debut deals recently - a bright spot in a grim time! - and here are some of my faves:

Let's Hear It For The Little Guy! (Because Bigger Isn't Always Better)

littleguyYour manuscript is finally finished. It’s been revised, agonized over, critiqued, and revised again. It’s ready to take the next step. It’s ready for an agent. And because you want nothing but the best for your manuscript, you know you’ve got to find the best agent possible. The biggest name, the top seller, the power player. Right?

Well, not necessarily. Many superstar agents are great at what they do – that’s how they became superstars, after all – but they’re not the right agents for every project. Sometimes the right agent is one you just haven’t heard of yet.

"I expect to work more with Beth Jusino once I can get the time to work more on my manuscript. I was impressed by the length and extent of her evaluation and suggestions for improvement."
